Why the Empty Nest Can Feel So Much Harder Than You Expected

Empty bird nest symbolizing parents adjusting to children leaving home, representing the emotional transition of the empty nest stage.

There’s a moment in parenting that no one really prepares you for…

It’s not the sleepless nights, or the toddler tantrums, or even the teenage years.

It’s the moment your young adult child leaves—and the house gets quiet.

And instead of feeling only pride or excitement…
you feel something heavier.

A mix of:

  • sadness

  • restlessness

  • anxiety

  • even a little disorientation

If this is you, you’re experiencing something very real.

You didn’t just lose a role—you lost a rhythm

For years, your life had structure:

  • schedules

  • routines

  • responsibilities

  • constant connection

And then suddenly… it shifts.

Even if your child is thriving, something in you feels unsettled.

That’s because this transition isn’t just logistical.
It’s emotional, relational, and identity-based.

Why it can feel so intense

This stage often brings up more than you expect:

  • Grief — even when it’s a “good” transition

  • Loss of purpose — “What am I supposed to do now?”

  • Relationship shifts — with your partner, your friends, even yourself

  • Anxiety about the future — for them and for you

And if your child is moving in and out of the house?
That can feel even more destabilizing.

You’re not alone in this

One of the hardest parts of this phase is how invisible it can feel.

Everyone talks about babies.
Everyone talks about teenagers.

But this?
This stage often goes unnamed.

And because of that, many parents feel like they’re the only ones struggling.

You’re not.

This can also be a beginning

As uncomfortable as it is, this transition can also open the door to something new:

  • reconnecting with yourself

  • redefining your relationships

  • creating space for what’s next

But you don’t have to figure that out alone.

If you’re in this stage…

I’m currently offering a small, in-person group in Newport Beach for parents navigating the transition of launching young adults.

It’s a space to:

  • talk honestly about what this phase feels like

  • connect with others who get it

  • begin figuring out what this next chapter looks like
