How to Get the Most Out of Therapy
When you make the decision to go to therapy, it’s an investment of your time and money! As your therapist, I want you to maximize the investment you are making in yourself. Here are some ways you can approach your work in therapy that I have noticed tend to result in greater growth and progress.
how to get the most out of therapy:
Be consistent. Therapy is most effective when you can commit to attending your weekly session. It keeps the momentum going and maximizes your time versus having to play “catch-up” after skipping a week. Attending weekly, especially in the beginning, will set you up and keep the momentum going.
Commit to the work outside of session. Your therapy session is a jumping-off point for the work that continues throughout the rest of the week. Clients who are willing to reflect on and engage with what was discussed outside of the therapy room often experience greater progress.
Embrace curiosity. In therapy, curiosity is our friend. When we get curious about ourselves—our thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and more—we gain deeper insight into our desires and values. This is where the magic happens. Approaching therapy with openness and curiosity helps us both get to know you better and paves the way for meaningful personal growth.
Be willing to try new things. What we explore in therapy can illuminate new ways of thinking, behaving, or perceiving the problem. Taking the insights with you into the week and being willing to try new behaviors or responses will give you new data sets to work with. The willingness to take small steps to try different things will yield greater results.
Be honest. You know that thing you know you should be talking about in session, but you avoid talking about it? That’s probably the thing we should be talking about. When you are ready. Also, be honest with your therapist about what has been helpful or not helpful in the process for you. Every client is unique because every human is unique. If something is not working for you - or if something didn’t sit right with you - we want to know.
